Definition: The FSC is an independent, non - governmental, non - profit organization founded in Toronto, Canada in 1993. Its aim is to unite global forces to promote environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable forest management worldwide, and to provide solutions to the problem of forest damage caused by improper logging.

Standard - setting: It formulates the globally unified "FSC Principles and Criteria", which include 10 general guidelines and forest assessment criteria, covering social, environmental, and economic factors to ensure the sustainability of forest management.
